In the Vise of Evils

May 8 & 15, 2007

Both shows sold out, with 's highest ever sales records at Fifth-Third Bank Theater (2nd all-time high)

Written by Kalman Kivkovich, and directed by Carrie-Ellen Zappa

There are many stories about the Holocaust, but this story is viewed from an angle rarely known to the public---the Russian side.  The novel and its offspring play are based on actual events.

August 1938.  Poland.  A Jewish couple meets at a resort.  They both have hopes and dreams, but Hitler's dreams are in their way.  As the Germans invade, the brutal treatment of Jews begins.  NATEK, his fiancée, FRYDA, and his brother, BEREK, escape from the Nazis' monstrous claws straight into the Soviets' vicious jaws.  They are arrested, separated, crammed into boxcars and sent on a long voyage to hell.  The brothers are fortunate to remain together.  They struggle to survive.  They are determined to find Fryda . . . .

Embers from the Ashes:  A Girl's Holocaust Diary

May 13, 2008

The show sold out, with 's second highest sales record at Fifth-Third Bank Theater

Written by Kalman Kivkovich, and directed by Tom Manning

Embers from the Ashes: A Girl's Holocaust Diary is loosely based on a recently found journal, Ruthka Laskier's. A 14-year-old Israeli girl discovers having a sister who had perished in the Holocaust. Decades later, in 2006, she learns that a Polish woman had found her sister's notebook, but kept it a secret for 61 years. A flashback takes us to 1942, Nazi-occupied Bedzin, Poland. We stay with a family who faces foreseeable destruction. We witness the struggle of an adolescent coming of age in the foreground of formidable evil. It echoes the voices of a million and a half Jewish children who didn't live to tell their stories.

al Dura: Truth or Deception?

April 24, 2012

The show was 's third at Jarson-Kaplan Theater.

Written and Directed by Kalman Kivkovich

A full-staged multimedia production

Loosely based on a tragic incident in the Middle East, as well as a follow-up notorious round of court battle in Paris, France. On September 30, 2000, France 2 TV broadcast footage of a shootout in Gaza, zooming in on a Palestinian father and his 12-year-old son taking cover behind a concrete drum. According to the report, filmed by a Palestinian reporter for the state-run French network, the boy, Mohammed al Dura, was gunned down by the Israeli forces . . . but was he really . . . ? What you hear from the media is not always the truth, and too often the media become the NEWS. . . . At the center of this stirring drama was Philippe Karsenty, a Jew from Paris, a media expert who accused the state-run French network of knowingly broadcasting a tape of a staged scene provided by a Palestinian cameraman, in which a Palestinian boy was allegedly murdered by Israeli soldiers. The incident helped to set off the Palestinian Second Intifada, and fan the flames of anti-Semitism around the world. Many were murdered as revenge, including Daniel Pearl, the Wall Street Journal reporter.

al Dura—Truth or Deception? is not solely about the Israelis and the Palestinians. Moreover, it deals with the misuse of viral media to incite animosity and violence, and the ultimate triumph of justice and law over prejudice and misrepresentation of the truth. Karsenty wins in the end—but at what cost to his family, his personal freedom, and his society?
